Elements: Black, Gold and Red

Inks applied on thick arches France paper (we found a bunch that were left on Arlozerov street in Tel Aviv).

What began as experiments of different inks drawing techniques evolved into a series called: Elements.

Basically I used only the colors: Red Gold and Black (all Windsor Newton inks), applying them to the wet paper using a calligraphy brush and a flat screwdriver.

I worked methodically, applying the colors layer by layer. I Started with the PURE Black ink, shaping the forms and than adding some washes here and there and already put a little Gold in my Black ink. Next came the Red, in fast and wet strokes (mess up half the studio). Last, I added the final touches of Gold, rubbing them on the paper, scratching them with the screwdriver, digging deep into the layered paint. And than it is over, and I have to let it go (something thats never easy for me) and hang it to dry on the cloth line outside.

First impression The images in Elements are all about powers, visible and invisible, the relations between the elements in these landscapes, proportions, fire and wind and different layers of conflicts.

The “Second Lebanon War” we had here in Israel last year had planted these visions in my mind, and the best way I knew how to express them was to paint them quickly, a few at a time, with this fast drying medium, so that I’ll still have the images burned in my head when I work.

This kind of work process was a very unusual for me, I seldom work without planning ahead what I want to express in a work and how. Though I DID limit my palate to set the ambiance in the drawings, I did not have to stop and plan, it all happened as if it was already planned. Scary isn’t it? :)
